چکیده
With the advent of precise preand intraoperative imaging means, the development of sophisticated image data visualization, and the accessibility of submillimetric, real-time tracking of objects in space, surgical navigation systems have been created that aim at enhanced surgical accuracy and ultimately improved clinical outcome [3, 6, 9, 13, 17, 20]. Numerous studies have shown the superiority of computer-assisted versus conventional instrumentation at different levels of the spine regarding accuracy and thus potential safety [4, 14, 24, 25]. However, this technique has been less successful in contributing to the reduction of intraoperative invasiveness, although this aim has been anticipated by most of the pioneering authors [13, 17, 20]. It is the aim of this article to outline the basic principles of computer assistance for spine surgery, whichwill help the reader to understand why navigated interventions must be invasive in the first place. In addition, efforts towards less and minimally invasive procedures of the past and current research will be presented and discussed.

Midterm outcomes of electromagnetic computer-assisted navigation in minimally invasive total knee arthroplasty
BACKGROUND A combination of two emerging technologies, computer-assisted navigation and minimally invasive surgery, in total knee arthroplasty has gained increasing interests from orthopedic surgeons around the world. To date, there has never been any midterm study for clinical and radiographic outcomes from using an electromagnetic computer-assisted navigation system. In this study, we aimed t...

BACKGROUND The intra-operative three-dimensional (3D) structure of tissue organs and laparoscope motion are the basis for many tasks in computer-assisted surgery (CAS), such as safe surgical navigation and registration of pre-operative and intra-operative data for soft tissues. METHODS This article provides a literature review on laparoscopic video-based intra-operative techniques of 3D surfa...
متن کاملOptical techniques for 3D surface reconstruction in computer-assisted laparoscopic surgery
One of the main challenges for computer-assisted surgery (CAS) is to determine the intra-operative morphology and motion of soft-tissues. This information is prerequisite to the registration of multi-modal patient-specific data for enhancing the surgeon's navigation capabilities by observing beyond exposed tissue surfaces and for providing intelligent control of robotic-assisted instruments. In...
متن کاملA Probabilistic Framework for Tracking Deformable Soft Tissue in Minimally Invasive Surgery
The use of vision based algorithms in minimally invasive surgery has attracted significant attention in recent years due to its potential in providing in situ 3D tissue deformation recovery for intra-operative surgical guidance and robotic navigation. Thus far, a large number of feature descriptors have been proposed in computer vision but direct application of these techniques to minimally inv...
متن کاملMinimally Invasive Surgical Approach to Distal Fibula Fractures: A Technique Tip
Wound complications following ankle fracture surgery are a major concern. Through the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques some of these complications can be mitigated. Recent investigations have reported on percutaneous fixation of distal fibula fractures demonstrating similar radiographic and functional outcomes to traditional open approaches. The purpose of this manuscript is to ...
